Amazon.ca Let Clash fans tell each other, two twenty-two-year-old kids have decided to take over! The project Ego War is a compendium of pop energy, mixing the boosted side of The Who and the disillusioned speech of The Kinks, all wrapped in bass lines inspired by long hours spent in raves. The effect sought here is efficiency at all costs, borrowing, if necessary, from Happy Monday as well as Armand Van Helden, and anything that can come to mind without restriction of genre. Thus, it is this boundless spontaneity, a true punk state of mind, which is felt in the energy released by the compositions of this duo from a western suburb of London. The texts are not always rosy and often raw, not to say provocative, but the tone seems authentic and simply reflects the enthusiasm of a youth, plagued by boredom, having found a saving means of expression. The result: a powerful house imbued as much with ska as with UK garage, a dancefloor sound with the festive charm of Squeeze and Madness. The Audio Bullys are therefore stirring up the ashes of new wave, ska and punk, rather surprising from two guys who weren't born in 1980! But a songwriter like Simon Franks, who is able to cite as references The Specials, Bob Dylan and the Beatles as well as Biggie Smalls and Method Man or Blondie and Police, seems to have a culture and an openness to mind sharp enough to embark on such a crossover project. And it is precisely because of this absence of prejudices about music that Simon and Tom seem determined to seduce the dancefloors of the whole world... Let's wish them good luck. Luc Demont
