Details: Product Description La Chango Family is the antidote to prescribe in case of the blues. At a time when everyone is looking for a panacea for the ills of the soul, this family unlike any other arrives just in time with its festive tunes, hot rhythms, and contagious madness. Their goal is disarmingly simple: they want to put some sunshine into people's "corazones"! Amazon.ca Even if they are following in the footsteps of Mano Negra, Les Négresses Vertes, and Lo'Jo, the composite pop of La Chango Family is quite at home in the bohemian, world-open, and slightly calculating environment of the Plateau-Mont-Royal. With its joyful ratatouille of reggae, African and Latin rhythms, French chanson, and gypsy spirit, scented with a fleeting aroma of the Orient, the Quebec troupe takes up the eclecticism that once set Les Colocs apart. The winners of the 2001 Francouvertes, who are releasing their first album here, have a heavier hand than Dédé's band when it comes to balancing the ingredients, however. The tendency of singer and lyricist Lundo to sprinkle Spanish and English words into his francophone poetry, for example, perhaps denotes an overly emphatic desire to "be multicultural." And his leftist discourse doesn't always avoid preaching to the converted... Should we, therefore, shun the pleasure provided by the sunny, if not downright solar, pop of this inspired collective? Certainly not! Especially when it grooves as much as in the opening track, "Paramatman," or when full, warm voices collide before launching into a mantra burning with intensity, as in the spellbinding "Mekench Mouchkel." The soul is truly there, and maturity is knocking at the door. --Frédéric Murphy
