Amazon.ca While it is true that the media loves to cover breakups, a happy reunion is always a more enjoyable story to focus on. Such is the case with the new Philosopher Kings CD, Castles. After releasing three discs in the mid '90s--which included pop radio hits "Charms" and "Hurts To Love You"-- the band decided to split in order to pursue other interests. Their subsequent success proved the legitimacy of that decision; two members--frontman Gerald Eaton (aka Jarvis Church) and guitarist/sampler Brian West--went on to collectively produce two CDs, while keyboardist Jon Levine formed. Equally impressive, the musicians collectively wrote over 100 songs for everyone from Tina Turner, to Ricky Martin, to Divine Brown. While collaborating on a project, the Philosophers finally decided to reunite; though the musicians themselves my have changed considerably, their sound is the same silky R&B that has existed since day one. Within Castles's grooves, the musical touchstones range from The Style Council (via the soulful "Not That Man") to Maroon 5 ("Beautiful Creature") to latter-day Santana, in the form of "Round and Round." More than any other, the last full-length song on the CD, "Sweet Black Air" shows the benefits of recording the disc 'live off the floor' (the musicians record the album playing live together in one room) allowing for more of has vibrating, impulsive sound. Expect no great surprises here, just a smooth and steady musical glow from this team of respected Canadian singer-songwriters. --Denise Sheppard
