He didn't embarrass himself on The Brak Album.) Various flavors of pop are the thing, from Semisonic and Fastball tracks that could get them back on the radio to the sexy Vitamin C-like strut of Touch & Go's "Straight to... Number One." The quality is mostly high, apart from dull cuts by boy-group Youngstown, lite-rockers Nine Days, and singer-songwriter Dylan O'Brian. Nothing fully captures the dazzle of under-20 love (or lust), though energy flies off Dandy Warhols' fabulous Stones rip "Bohemian Like You" and Uncle Kracker gets wittier than boss Kid Rock on his Michael Stipe-goes-swamp-rock" Mr Hawkins." Finally, with "Skin," Collective Soul knock off another set of those hooks that end up catching even nonfans. --Rickey Wright
