Details: Product Description Director Spike Jonze delivers a stunningly original comedy that seamlessly blends fictional characters and situations with the lives of real people: obsessive orchid hunter John Laroche (Cooper), NewYorker journalist Susan Orlean (Streep), Hollywood screenwriter Charlie Kaufman (Cage), and his twin brother, Donald (also Cage). As Charlie struggles to adapt Orlean's best-selling book "The OrchidThief," he writes himself into his own movie. The various stories crash into one another exploding into a wildly imaginative film. ADAPTATION, the year's most talked about movie, is at once a hilarious drama and a moving comedy. Amazon.ca Director Spike Jonze and screenwriter Charlie Kaufman asserted themselves, in 2000, as the most promising duo of American independent cinema in the imaginative Being John Malkovich. They are reunited again Adaptation, which, even if it lacks the brilliance of the previous one, shines with its originality. The idea is simple: Kaufman had tried, in vain, to adapt the novel The Flight of the Orchid, by Susan Orlean. He therefore took his own failure as the subject of the scenario. Nicolas Cage here becomes Charlie Kaufman, a neurotic and fearful screenwriter, with a more gifted twin brother. In parallel, we are told the relationship between the author of the book (Meryl Streep) and her subject, an orchid poacher (Chris Cooper, Oscar for Best Supporting Actor). Traveling briskly between the different levels of reality, Jonze and Kaufman question themselves on creation in the cinema. Unfortunately, the plots are sometimes confused and interfere with the coherence of the reflection, especially when the story of the screenwriter and that of the author come together in a clumsy attempt to create a surprising ending. In fact, even if the audacity of the project is to be welcomed, the predominance of the script over the staging is too often disconcerting for Adaptation to really live up to what the two friends can offer. --Helen Faradji
