Details: In an isolated village, misery eats away at the inhabitants and their dreams. The villagers of Saint-Élie-de-Caxton barely have enough food to survive and their gardens don't produce enough to stave off hunger. One spring, Ésimésac, blessed with a powerful spirit, convinces the townsfolk to collaborate on a community garden. Each person, he argues, will multiply his or her yield by cultivating the land together. At the same time, talk of a new railway line promises to connect Saint-Élie-de-Caxton to the rest of the world. The train brings the hope of abundance and an easier life. Riopel, the hulking blacksmith, starts working on the railway track and convinces the locals to invest, rather than waste their time playing in the garden. Come summer, one by one, the gardeners switch over to the blacksmith's side. Ésimésac's big project flounders under the weight of metal. But can he really stop progress? -------------------- In an isolated village, misery plagues its world and the dreams of the inhabitants. For several years, the inhabitants of Saint-Élie-de-Caxton have barely found enough to eat to stay alive. In the spring, Ésimésac, the only inhabitant of the village who has no shade but enjoys great strength, decides to get down to it to restore hope to the bellies of the village. He manages to convince his people to contribute to a community garden project. He manages to multiply the strengths of each to cultivate on a large scale. At the same time, we hear a rumor that the construction of a railway in the region will soon link Saint-Élie-de-Caxton to the rest of the world. With the promise of carriages filled with opulence and grub, the train gives hope of comfort and ease. The blacksmith Riopel, chose to get involved in the manufacture of rails rather than in market gardening. And he arrives to convince people to invest in his scrap metal and business rather than playing the garden. Ésimésac's great common project is losing its feathers and faltering under the weight of metal, but should it stand in the way of progress?
