Details: Amazon.ca The latest opus from Brian De Palma, the most Hitchcockian of American directors, is a thriller with solid suspense, largely shot during the Cannes Film Festival in 2001. Starring Antonio Banderas and the sculptural Rebecca Romijn-Stamos, Femme fatale is also a real exercise in cinematographic stylization. A high-caliber thief and master in the art of lying, Laure knows how to take advantage of her physical assets to commit her misdeeds. But the game will get tougher when it comes to stealing a piece of jewelry weighing nearly two kilos of pure gold, set with 510 diamonds, worn by an actress on a premiere night. Mannerist to the core, Brian De Palma sums up all the films he likes here: Hitchcock's, of course, but also film noir, erotic thrillers and technological suspense. If these incessant quotes and ubiquitous music can annoy, its staging all in pretense (although flashy and flashy) has the merit of arousing curiosity. And the rather amusing acting of Antonio Banderas in no way spoils the pleasure of being caught up in the meticulous stratagems of this femme fatale. --Helen Faradji
