Details: Amazon.ca After having obtained his license to direct for the United States thanks to his Crimson Rivers, the French director Mathieu Kassovitz exercises his right of visa with Gothika, a fantastic thriller with spectacular effects, far from the intelligence of the subject brilliantly staged in La Haine or the sympathetic freshness of Métis. Dr. Miranda Gray is a psychiatrist at Woodward Women's Penitentiary. Only one of his patients, Chloé, is a problem for him. But her troubles are far from over since Gray herself will be accused of murder and interned in the establishment soon after. Counting on the services of two of Hollywood's most attractive actresses, Penelope Cruz (quite convincing) and Halle Berry (sometimes mechanically acting), filmed in rather cold and disturbing tones of gray and blue, Gothika is a thriller with certain effectiveness. Despite the debauchery of bombastic effects, the somewhat outrageous staging and the intrusive music, the film manages to provoke many shocks. However, Mathieu Kassovitz's American essay leaves the unpleasant impression of having seen only the methodical application of a frightening recipe, its rather conventional script never succeeding in giving the film the substance that would probably have made it creepy. – Helen Faradji.
