I Remember - DVD
1949. Abitibi. For his son Louis, an adorable kid with laughing dimples, Robert Sincenne is a hero. But for the bosses of the mine where he works, the Catholic Church and the all-powerful Premier of Quebec, Maurice Duplessis, he is the enemy. Communist and free-thinker, Robert wants to take the lead of the Sullidor Mining union. When his rival Richard Bombardier is accidentally killed, his fate is sealed. At least for a while, before he goes into exile. Nine years later, the grown-up little Louis befriended Némésis, the daughter of Bombardier's widow. Their complicity will lead them to Ireland. André Forcier returns for his 12th film in the more social vein of his sublime Hot Water, Fret Water and Bar Salon. Without of course losing an ounce of its provocation. Crude, ironic, satirical but also tender and endearing, I remember plays with shadows and lights in magnificent black and white to destabilize received ideas while bringing together the cream of local actors (Céline Bonnier, Gaston Lepage, Rémy Girard , Hélène Bourgeois-Leclerc, France Castel, Roy Dupuis…) and revisit the history of Quebec in their own way. But make no mistake! If Forcier evokes a time that those under 20 would do well to know, it is also about the Quebec of today that he speaks to us. The words national identity have rarely resounded so strongly.
