Details: Having not known success until late, once released on video, Karmina , by Gabriel Pelletier, is an unfairly underrated film, a hilarious "Quebec vampire comedy". On the point of getting married to the filthy Vlad (Yves Pelletier), Karmina (Isabelle Cyr), a young and beautiful vampire, flees her native Transylvania, and takes refuge, in Montreal, with an aunt (France Castel), who drinks a potion allowing vampires to become human for a while. The "vampirette" falls in love with a young musician (Robert Brouillette), but the abject Vlad arrives at Mirabel airport, vampirizes a customs officer (Gildor Roy), and sets off in the footsteps of his future wife. It will bleed !
From Polanski ( Le Bal des vampires ) to Molinaro ( Dracula father and son ), vampirism and humor have often gone hand in hand. Co-scripted, dialogued and performed by Yves "RBO" Pelletier, Karmina is a delicious film, with an original plot, punchy humor, delirious gags and endearing characters. From the photo by Éric Cayla to the music by Patrick Bourgeois, including the costumes by Denis Sperdouklis, the make-up by Pierre Saindon and the sets by Normand Sarrazin, every aspect of the film is beyond reproach. Under the assured direction of Gabriel Pelletier ( La Vie après l'amour ), Karmina is a very successful (and all too rare in Quebec cinema) foray into whimsical comedy. -- Eric Fourlanty
