The Divine Secrets of Little Ya-Ya (French Version)

Details: Amazon.ca To make her transition to directing, Callie Khouri, Oscar-winning screenwriter of Thelma and Louise, chose to adapt Rebecca Wells' best-selling novel, The Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood. Well done to him since it makes this dramatic comedy a much deeper work than it seems. Little girls, four friends who called themselves the Ya-Ya swore loyalty to each other. Years later, they will keep their promise when a conflict arises between one of them, Vivi, and her daughter Sidda Lee. Because although Vivi has become a respectable and refined lady, she is far from having been an exemplary mother. The Ya-Ya will then dive back into their memories to help the girl understand her mother's eccentric past and forgive her. Callie Khouri managed a nuanced and often just film, bringing together tasty actresses, like Ashley Judd, dazzling as young Vivi, and Maggie Smith, delectable as ya-ya tongue-in-cheek with a big heart. She quite skilfully recreates this sometimes harsh tale, and delivers a pleasant film, full of ingenious flashbacks and supported by a rather well done dramatic progression. Oscillating constantly between sweet and bitter, The Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood avoids taking an overly conventional path and, despite an overly sweet musical coating, casts a new and moving look at the difficult mother- daughter. --Helen Faradji
