The Book of Eve
Format: NTSC
Release Date: 2004-06-29
Details: Amazon.ca Adapted from a short story by Constance Beresford-Howe, The Book of Eve is the 12th film by Quebec director Claude Fournier. Starring Claire Bloom and singer Daniel Lavoie, this feature film also paints a nuanced and original portrait of the generation that is modestly called that of our “elders”. Eve is 65 years old. She has been married for almost 40 years to Mr. Smallwood, a rich and tyrannical man. Both live in an upscale neighborhood of Montreal until Ève realizes that her life is slipping through her fingers. Without notice, or argument, she leaves and despite her very small retirement pension, begins to believe in her dreams again. There she will find the freedom and independence she longed for, and even love. The Book of Eve is a film (perhaps too much) full of laudable intentions. Seeking to show us that life does not stop at retirement age, it nevertheless suffers from some clumsy dialogues and various dreamlike inserts rather weighing down the story. Fortunately, the sweet relationship between Ève (Claire Bloom, mischievous) and Johnny (Daniel Lavoie, flirtatious smile) and the refreshing appearances of Mari-Jo Thério, Luck Mervil and Dan Bigras are enough to make this film charming and full of tenderness. --Helen Faradji
