Elvis Gratton: King of Kings (French version)

Details: Amazon.ca One of Quebec's first cult films, Elvis Gratton has become the absolute symbol of the happy fool succumbing to American imperialism, as well as an archetypal “cheeky”. Bob Gratton likes to be called Elvis: he regularly takes part in contests to imitate the King and various statues of his idol sit enthroned in his garage. Pot-bellied, vulgar, pontificating, he does not hide his reactionary opinions on politics and society and is obsessed with the American dream. A trip to the Republic of Santa Banana, which he wins following a competition, reveals him in all his splendor. Behind the coarse, greasy humor of this low-budget comedy, Pierre Falardeau shoots point-blank at cultural colonialism, which he clearly considers to be one of the obstacles to the advent of Quebec sovereignty. The caricature is fierce, but the reflection is serious. The film would also not have the same strike force without Julien Poulin, co-screenwriter and main actor, breathtaking in his role of Elvis. Certain scenes, notably the one where he is bathing, two maple leaves hanging from his bathing suit, or even the moment when he explains to a Frenchman that he is a “Francophone French Canadian Quebecer”, are striking. --Anne-Marie Cloutier
