Thanks to a keen sense of direction and impeccable sound work, Nolan creates a dangerously quiet universe, a theater of ambiguous and destabilizing relationships. Taking advantage of the great talent of his performers – Al Pacino, an excellent cop suffocated by a situation he has less and less control of, and Robin Williams, in a very convincing counter-employment –, the director manages a thriller with precise suspense, sustained by a particularly subtle tension. A sophisticated scenario and overwhelming depths of field are also among the ingredients of this very good recipe. Perfectly mastered visually, Insomnia is one of those films that lead us to believe that genre cinema still has a promising future. --Helen Faradji
