Details: Amazon.ca Second film adaptation of Anne Rice's work after Interview with the Vampire, Queen of the Damned has fun bringing the vampire Lestat back into the contemporary world of gothic rock. Tired of living in the shadows, Lestat chooses to become a rock star in order to reveal himself to the world. His pallor, his fear of light and his sharp teeth are then tolerated as artistic eccentricities. But the other vampires don't take kindly to this life in the spotlight. The comparison with Interview with the Vampire is inevitable. In the skin of Lestat, the young Stuart Townsend, who is more akin to a Christlike Jim Morrison than to a vampire, never reaches the degree of amused and refined cynicism of Tom Cruise. The sets are more flashy, and the mystery is less fleshed out. In fact, Queen of the Damned lacks that elegant and cold distance that characterized Neil Jordan's film, although the appearance of Vincent Perez as the vampire creator of Lestat remedies it somewhat. The performance of singer Aaliyah as the cruel and fierce queen of the damned is also quite convincing. But despite some good elements, the time chosen is certainly not the one that best suits vampires. --Helen Faradji
