Details: Product Description From DreamWorks Pictures, the studio that brought you The Help, comes the smart and witty drama People Like Us, featuring an all-star cast, including Chris Pine ( Star Trek), Elizabeth Banks ( The Hunger Games), award-winning Michelle Pfeiffer and Olivia Wilde. Sam (Chris Pine) is a twenty-something, fast-talking salesman whose latest deal collapses the day he learns his father has suddenly died. Against his wishes, Sam is called home to put his father's estate in order and reconnect with his estranged family. While there, he uncovers a starting secret that turns his entire world upside down — he has a 30-year-old sister he never knew existed. Complete with bonus material that reveals how people like us became People Like Us, this is an inspirational and touching movie everyone can relate to. Amazon.ca Sam (Chris Pine) would like to go back home for his father's funeral, say a couple of nice things to Mom (Michelle Pfeiffer), and get out of there. Let's just say his relationship with the old man was not warm. Ah, but his father left Sam an uncomfortable job: Sam must deliver $150,000 to someone he's never met. And that's where People Like Us finds its premise, as Sam (very mild spoiler ahead) searches for the half-sister he never knew he had. A single mom and recovering alcoholic, Frankie (played by Elizabeth Banks) is also nursing the wounds from having a mostly absent father--so she and Sam have that much in common. Now this might be the setup for a thoughtful tearjerker, except that veteran screenwriters Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci have relied on an ancient plot device: Sam can't bring himself to tell Frankie who he actually is or what their father's bequest was, thus delaying the movie's resolution out of feature length. Your enjoyment of People Like Us will depend entirely on whether you find this contrivance a poignant measure of Sam's crisis, or an irritating trick to pull the melodramatic strings. Pine and Banks are good together, even if their characters don't seem fleshed out beyond the sketch level, and it's good to see Michelle Pfeiffer moving smoothly into a character role. They all could've used more to work with than this. --Robert Horton
