On a cold Canadian winter morning, Tomás leaves his family still asleep to catch a flight to Spain. In Madrid, he finds his old friend Julián, suffering from an incurable cancer. This surprise visit is enough to delight Julián, a little short of money actor who lives with his faithful dog, Truman. Hoping to convince Julián to continue his palliative chemotherapy treatments, Tomás nevertheless accepts his decision to give it up. The reunion can therefore go ahead, and Julián designs a small program that takes them from a veterinarian's office to a café in Amsterdam to a funeral complex. As they travel, Tomás will witness Julián's efforts to put his life in order and secure a future for Truman and his 22-year-old son.

Leaving snowy Canada, where he now lives, Tomas travels to Madrid to visit Julian, a college friend who's been diagnosed with cancer. Tomas has planned in secret with Paula's cousin Julian to convince the latter to undergo chemotherapy treatment that will give him a few more months to live. The patient objects, saying, at what price? Resigned to the fact that he's going to die, Julian agrees to leave Madrid for four days with Tomas as an opportunity to celebrate life. Their trip takes them to Amsterdam, where Julian's son is studying. But what concerns Julian the most is what will happen to his old dog, Truman, so Tomas agrees to help find him a new home.
