Details: Product Description Evora, Cesaria Amazon.ca It is thanks to her, the "Barefoot Diva," as she was nicknamed in France, that the world discovered this arid archipelago with the misleading name: Cape Verde. Swept by winds and dust, the Cape Verde islands resemble the Sahel more than an idyllic postcard. This is where all the songs from the woman her compatriots call "Cize" come from, such as the gentle morna backed by trumpet and guitars that can be heard here. Mornas and Coladeras, gathered in this anthology, present two dominant aspects of Cesaria Evora's music. The morna remains the most well-known form, both in Cape Verde and beyond. And it is with these sad melodies that tracks like "Partida" or "Perseguida" touch the heart. They carry the deep soul of the Cape Verdean people. One can even hear accents of tango ("Lua Nha Testtemundia"). Simple love stories, recounting the distance from a loved one and separation, where the companions are wind instruments—clarinet, saxophone, trumpet—and always strings, those guitars derived from fado ("Crepuscular Solidao"). As if to brighten these dark moments, the humor and cheerfulness of the coladeras respond with familiar tracks ("Nho Antone Escaderode"), smiling verses ("Petit pays"), and calls to dance, salsa ("Fala Pa Fala") or Brazil ("Carnaval De Sao Vicente"). Even if she had to wait until her fifties to be recognized as a major artist by the entire world, Cesaria has not missed a date with the public since, and these 2 CDs contain the best memories of it. --José Ruiz
