Details: Amazon.ca An atypical committed filmmaker, in that he is both militant and resolutely popular, Pierre Falardeau is one of the most controversial and surprising authors in Quebec; an all-terrain polemicist who goes from a comedy castigating the Americanization of the average Quebecer (Elvis Gratton) to a historical drama recounting the kidnapping and execution of Minister Pierre Laporte by the Front de Liberation du Québec (October). February 15, 1839 was refused by Canadian financing institutions for more than ten years and was accepted only after a long campaign of popular pressure. In this ambitious film, the filmmaker takes us back to the day after the English repression of the 1837-38 revolt to recreate the last hours and the hanging of five Patriots, and mainly that of Marie-Thomas Chevalier De Lorimier (superbly played by Luc Picard ). From this closed prison, Falardeau signs an intimate historical tragedy which aims to be a microcosm of the history of Quebec, multiplies the references to its current situation and offers some scenes of strong emotions (particularly between De Lorimier and his wife, the intense Sylvie Drapeau). While the filmmaker's usual detractors have criticized him for his simplistic vision of history, few could resist the emotional charge of this overwhelming drama, which imposes itself - with its uncluttered staging, its magnificent images and its nuanced reflection on the price of commitment – as one of the centerpieces of Pierre Falardeau's work. --Georges Privet
