His unique sound - filled with Spanish and African roots - is a fusion of multiple influences: rumba, guaguancó, bolero, son, conga, danzón and timba. Mixing black and white rhythms, Carlos Placeres superimposes social poetry and humour on traditional and contemporaries melodies and beats. He is known in Cuba as a "trovador" - a modern troubadour. "A special thanks to LOS ANCESTROS for giving me the opportunity to make music with my guitar and my voice. Thank you for being such an inspiration and for teaching me that speaking up is the only way to get my message across." Carlos Placeres, a singer-songwriter from Havana, delivers a piece of his music with Spanish and African roots and multiple influences: rumba, guaguancó, bolero, conga, danzón, and timba. Amazon.ca The Wim Wenders-Ry Cooder team ( Buena Vista Social Club) triggered, in the late 90s, a sometimes disappointing avalanche of Afro-Cuban jazz on the international market. With A Los Ancestros, Carlos Placeres can boast of having managed to escape the hype by creating a sound as enjoyable as it is particular – even innovative – in a niche that was thought to be oversaturated. Accompanied by an orchestra that testifies to the richness of the Quebec melting pot, the Montreal-based singer-songwriter masters a myriad of instruments and, above all, a superb voice: never affected, it possesses an obvious warmth, a joyful sadness whose sincerity leaves no doubt. In A Los Ancestros, we rediscover this music in all the sprawling nature of its crossbreeding. Each influence – from West Africa to Louisiana, by way of São Paulo – finds a distinct voice here, never erased and yet always in service of the others. Ignoring trendy fair-weather artists and genre constraints, Carlos Placeres offers music of divine impurity that will please both laymen and connoisseurs, for the simple reason that it emanates melodies of palpable authenticity and intense scents of humanity. --David Desjardins
