Details: Revisiting the world of Julien Clerc through his most beautiful love songs is what this 19-track compilation proposes, drawing its selection from his third album, Ce n'est rien in 1971, up to Julien, the 1997 vintage. This thematic approach proves less commonplace than it seems, as it is true that this true romantic has inspired some of the most beautiful declarations of love in French music from his multiple songwriters. Seven were born from the surrealist poetry of Etienne Roda-Gil, from "La Fille de la véranda" to "La belle est arrivée," including the moving wonders that are "Je sais que c'est elle" and "Souffrir par toi n'est pas souffrir." The magnificent "Sans toi" is taken from Julien Clerc's collaboration with Maurice Vallet. The hits by Jean-Loup Dabadie, "Ma préférence" and "Femmes... je vous aime," are naturally present, while there are also fruits of more episodic meetings: "J'aime ton corps" by Maxime Le Forestier, "Les Aventures à l'eau" by David McNeil, "Mon ange" and "Fais-moi une place" by Françoise Hardy, "Carabat" by Laurent Chalumeau, and even a 19th-century poem by Marceline Desbordes-Valmore, "Les Séparés." So many songs that Julien Clerc inhabited with his vibrant, warm voice, and which he dressed with the excellence and originality of his compositions. --Sylvie Devilette
