It's also significant for demonstrating just how different a sequel can be in approach. There are plenty of chaotic moments throughout, but it's a mark of the writing's quality that the chaos still sounds structured. Following up the mood-setting "Agnus Dei" are two cues of extraordinary design. "Bait and Chase" and "The Beast Within" are full of effects that seem to mimic the spider-like movements of the Face Hugger. There are electronic drones and distortions taking unrecognizable percussion instruments into new soundscapes. It could almost be classified as sound design except for the clearly rhythmic underpinning that holds the elements together. Goldenthal also breaks off from these dark explorations (whenever the screen action dictates) with gentle choral interludes. After the accelerating plunge into nightmare for the film's finale, there's a beautiful string Adagio. The overall effect on the album's listener will be like taking a series of back and forth trips between heaven and hell. Breaking intellectual ground with application and method, it's a quintessential example of a film not living up to its music. -- Paul Tonks
