Details: Amazon.ca Just when it seems Timbaland and The Neptunes really do have the monopoly on R&B's stock of all things big and clever, along comes Lumidee's Almost Famous. Aided by barely-known producer DJ Tedsmooth, the 19-year-old from New York City's Spanish Harlem uses her debut album to turn her peers' hi-tech hit formula on its head, eschewing sci-fi scatter shot beats and cyber funk squelches for nothing but a stripped back rhythm track and sultry harmonies. While on paper it might not read like something to get too excited about, first single "Never Leave You (Uh Oooh, Uh Oooh!)" certifies her barebones vision as a potential pop masterstroke. Between the simmering vocals loops and the sweltering Caribbean hand claps, "Never Leave You" is the most revolutionary thing to happen to R&B since Kelis screamed her way through "Caught Out There". Better still, the tender clicks, smattering of Spanish guitars and hushed melodies make "Honestly" and "For Keeps" ballads that brim with real affection, not unremitting slush. On the downside, sometimes she's too understated for their own good--with little in the way of hook or backing track to hold the attention--and she could do without standard issue club tracks such as "Crashin' a Party". Even so, Almost Famous is far from just another off-the-rack R&B album. --Dan Gennoe Product Description Lumidee
