Details: Kurt Geinstein, an SS officer, doctor, and engineer, is recruited to implement the Final Solution, the extermination of the Jewish race. Terrified by what he discovers, he decides to do everything in secret to slow down the pace of the horrific operation and warn the world. He finds help from the young Jesuit Riccardo, who in turn tries to alert the Vatican... Staying true to his hobbyhorse, once again denouncing the hypocrisy and cowardice of the world's so-called leaders, Constantin Costa-Gavras delivers a moving, uncompromising, and highly restrained work. Led by an impeccable cast (Ulrich Tukur and Mathieu Kassovitz are impressively restrained in this drama where events catch up with and overwhelm them), Amen is a denunciation—a disturbing one; numerous religious associations unsuccessfully attacked the film and its poster, designed by Oliviero Toscani, upon its theatrical release—of the Church's attitude during the war toward an unprecedented tragedy, staged with talent and leaving us with reflections that linger long after the final credits. -- David Rault
