Details: Product Description American Splendor (DVD) Amazon.ca . Forming a solid team of documentarians (their first film, Off The Menu, was considered by USA Today as one of the 10 best films of 1998), Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini, explode the traditional limits of the documentary with their 4th film, American Splendor: the private life, a bold evocation of the life and work of Harvey Pekar, an American comic book author. On paper, Harvey Pekar is a detestable being. Documentalist in a hospital, he tells his story and those of his relatives in underground comics. Misanthropic, whiny, grumpy, he looks like a cynical version of a suburban Cleveland Droopy. Yet Harvey Pekar is also a funny, incisive and very endearing being. Telling his story in voice-over, Pekar is then interpreted on screen by Paul Giamatti (Storytelling, The man on the moon) in a fictionalized version of the life of the man. If the reality-fiction mixture is already delicious, the filmmakers add to it in a very inventive way an illustration of the comic strips of Pekar, and now the drawing intervenes in the image to give the film a rich, ambitious and original texture. Without ever being confused, very funny, the film also brings a completely relevant reflection on creation and was awarded the international critics prize, the prize of the national society of American critics, the critics gathered in Toronto and the great Sundance festival prize in 2003. – Helen Faradji.
