On paper, Harvey Pekar is an detestable human being. A hospital file clerk, he recounts his story and those of his loved ones in underground comic books. A misanthrope, a whiner, a grump, he has all the makings of a cynical, suburban Cleveland version of Droopy. Yet, Harvey Pekar is also a funny, incisive, and very endearing individual. Telling his story through voice-over, Pekar is played on screen by Paul Giamatti (Storytelling, Man on the Moon) in a fictionalized version of the man's life. While the blend of reality and fiction is already delightful, the filmmakers inventively add an illustration of Pekar's actual comic books, and suddenly the drawing steps into the image to give the film a rich, ambitious, and original texture.
