Details: Amazon.ca The commercial success of a film can often be measured by what it inspires. In the case of The Matrix, one could almost call it a seminal work, as this film, directed by the Wachowski brothers in 1999, was the origin not only of sequels and spoofs, but also of nine short films created by masters of animation, primarily Japanese, collected in The Animatrix. Even though these short films reveal extremely different styles, they all draw from an aesthetic closer to manga, those Japanese comic books, than to Disney—no doubt better suited to evoke the post-apocalyptic universe of The Matrix. One will especially appreciate the originality of these artists, who do not simply "stick" to the world of the Matrix, but propose variations, clarifications, and very creative deeper insights. From the origins of the war between humans and machines (The Second Renaissance, parts 1 and 2) to the possibility of knowing the truth by pushing oneself in sports (World Record), to a private detective transported straight from the 50s to find Trinity (A Detective Story), everyone succeeds in reinventing without copying. The Final Flight of the Osiris even positions itself as the missing link between The Matrix and The Matrix Reloaded, in a particularly dazzling 3D animation (by the creators of Final Fantasy). The Animatrix will be a particularly vibrant source for fans to quench their thirst for knowledge; for others, an excellent, original, and inventive way to discover a universe. --Helen Faradji
