Former Alta Moda and Infidels singer Molly Johnson opens her second solo album with "Summertime," the Gershwin standard covered so much it's practically a cliché. Johnson's version adds little to the canon except a cumbersome hip-hop beat. Moreover, it gives almost no indication of the pleasures to come--including the unobtrusive but complementary instrumentals that accompany the Torontonian's fine, smoky voice on subtly catchy tunes. Far better are the playful nightclub vibe on Marc Jordan's "I Must Have Left My Heart," the sweet melody of "He's Got My Heart" (written by Johnson's pianist Andrew Craig), the jumpy swing of "Red Cardinal," and the hazy , lazy mood of "Sleep in Late." Add an ambitious duet with Craig that combines the 1970 Five Stairsteps soul hit "Ooh Child" with Bob Marley's "Redemption Song" to end the disc, and "Summertime" seems even more like the result of sunstroke. --Shawn Conner
