In total, 43 songs trace the exemplary career of this urban cowboy, a free and uncompromising artist. The first tracks on this double disc ("Jonquière", "Pleine Lune") date from the fertile period when he was known as Cassonade, when he roamed the clubs of La Belle Province with his sidekick Plume Latraverse. You find yourself humming along to "Si j'avais un char," smiling while listening to "Mon grand cheval noir d'amour," and moved by the woes of "Doris," one of the most beautiful pieces in the Quebec repertoire about the ups and downs of an artist's life. The restored tapes perfectly capture his simple, endearing prose and his country influences. We can forgive him a few missteps in what remains an honest career—we could certainly do without the "Rap du pape," an inconsequential sketch. Because this anthology undeniably places Stephen Faulkner among the greats of our local music scene. --Diane Jean
