Details: Product Description Evora, Cesaria Amazon.ca It is thanks to her, the "Barefoot Diva", as she was nicknamed in France, that the world discovered this dry archipelago with the wrong name: Cape Verde. Windswept and dust-swept, the Cape Verde islands look more like the Sahel than an idyllic postcard. This is where all the songs of the one her compatriots named "Cize" come from, like the sweet morna supported by the trumpet and the guitars that can be heard here. Mornas and Coladeras, collected in this anthology, present two dominant aspects of the music of Cesaria Evora. The morna remains the best known form, both in Cape Verde and beyond. And it is with these sad melodies that titles like "Partida" or "Perseguida" touch the heart. It is the deep soul of the Cape Verdean people that they transport. You can even hear the accents of the tango ("Lua Nha Testtemundia"). Simple love stories, recounting estrangement from a loved one and separation, where the companions are the wind instruments – clarinet, saxophone, trumpet – and always strings, these guitars from fado ("Crepuscular Solidao"). As if to cheer up these dark moments, the humor and cheerfulness of the coladeras responds with familiar tracks ("Nho Antone Escaderode"), smiling verses ("Petit pays") and calls for dance, salsa ("Fala Pa Fala ") or Brazil ("Carnival Of Sao Vicente"). Even if she had to wait until she was in her fifties to be recognized as a major artist by the whole world, Cesaria has never missed an appointment with the public since, and these 2 CDs contain the best memories of her. --Jose Ruiz
