Details: Amazon.ca Charlie Haden's Quartet West (Alan Broadbent on piano, Ernie Watts on tenor sax, Larance Marable on drums) are here joined by a chamber orchestra as well as vocalists Shirley Horn and Bill Henderson. As befitting an album featuring such well-loved ballad singers the feel of the album is a traditional one with the majority of the songs coming from stage or screen. Horn for example sings the classic "The Folks Who Live On The Hill" from the movie High, Wide and Handsome (in which it was sung by Bing Crosby). As for Henderson, his numbers include "You My Love" from Sinatra's Young At Heart. Even those not from a soundtrack sound as if they should be, resulting in an album which sounds as if it itself is from a movie. The massed ranks of violinists from the orchestra (18 of them to be precise) mean that Haden's bass is only occasionally in the foreground, but this album is about ensemble playing rather than solos, which makes for a very lovely record. --Phil Brett
