A fifteen-year-old London collective with a rap-rock sound strongly tinged with Indian influences, Asian Dub Foundation puts a punk tiger in its world music engine and releases its most roaring album to date. Everything here, or nearly everything, is in the title, and it must be acknowledged that the tone is set from the outset. While Superpower, the third track on the new opus, builds power more gradually, Target Practice and Burning Fence, the first two, redouble in virulence. Closer to the sound that Asian Dub Foundation unleashes live (which has earned them the attention of the greats—Radiohead, RATM, The Cure), Punkara is a veritable downpour of boiling oil and proves that the blending of genres remains a sure bet. The proof is that Iggy Pop himself contributes to a cover of No Fun, an authentic cultural melting pot, which finishes pulling this record toward dizzying, swirling heights.
