Details: In 1975, Rod Stewart decided to start a new career and, to do so, to settle in the United States. At the same time as he left England behind him, Rod the Mod abandoned the folk of his first love and the Stone rock of the Faces in favor of a torrid rhythm'n'blues. The breakup album is aptly titled Atlantic Crossing . For this opus, Stewart surrounded himself with some of the best soul specialists. Thus, the legendary guitarist (and former accomplice of Otis Redding) Steve Cropper is in the game, as is the fine flower of the Muscle Shoals studios, from Roger Hawkins to David Hood, the Memphis Horns and producer Tom Dowd. The result is a typically American album, which smells of southern rhythm'n'blues. From "Three Time Loser" to "Sailing" (one of the singer's biggest hits), via a dazzling cover of Crazy Horse's "I Don't Want To Talk About It", the brass and strings s give it their all to carry Stewart's voice, alternately romantic and gravelly. --Philippe Margotin
