Details: Product Description Austin Powers in Goldmember (DVD) (WS) Amazon.ca It’s all there: the polished opening credits, the extravagant car, the style, the success with women… Yet this isn't James Bond, but rather Austin Powers, the most psychedelic British spy in the universe. However, this third adventure written by and starring the very funny Mike Myers, in which Austin faces Goldmember, is not the best installment in the series. Having escaped from prison, Dr. Evil teams up with the terrible Goldmember to destroy the Earth once again. When they kidnap Nigel Powers (Michael Caine), a high-class spy and Austin’s father, the latter decides to get rid of the criminals. He travels back in time and finds, in 1975, a choice partner: the feline Foxxy Cleopatra (Beyoncé Knowles). Although he has become a true star, fulfilled by love and money, Austin Powers is still looking to earn his father’s pride, much like Indiana Jones in The Last Crusade. To impress his pop, he attempts to forge an alliance with one criminal to flush out another, just as Agent Starling did in The Silence of the Lambs. And the list goes on. References to cinema, music, and advertising, as well as star cameos (Tom Cruise, Britney Spears, Steven Spielberg, etc.), abound. Even if some very good moments emerge (like the opening credits unfolding like a musical comedy) and the film as a whole is easy enough to watch, one looks in vain for the substance unique to Goldmember. Because through so many winks and pastiches, it is Austin Powers himself who ends up lacking substance. --Helen Faradji Special Features Not surprisingly, deleted scenes and outtakes are the hands-down highlights of Goldmember's abundant Infinifilm features. Mike Myers's throwaway gags are funnier than Pauly Shore's entire career, revealing how a relaxed set encourages a flood of inspired improvisation. The Infinifilm feature is a handy, alternative method of seeing (and hearing) all of the bonus materials in logical sequence, mostly comprising behind-the-scenes featurettes devoted to costumes, special effects, all-star cameos, make-up, and various "social and historical" aspects of the Austin Powers franchise. The Myers/Jay Roach commentary track is worth a listening for Myers's casual jocularity (and his decent willingness to give credit to others), but their Hollywood compliments, while obviously sincere, eventually grow tiresome. More enjoyable are the pop-up subtitles in the DVD's "Fact Track" feature, adding lighthearted factoids to enhance an already very funny movie. Taken together, these features emphasize the productive camaraderie of the Austin Powers team and the devoted seriousness that the filmmakers bring to their pursuit of the next big laugh. --Jeff Shannon
