Details: Product description It’s all there: the polished opening credits, the extravagant car, the style, the success with women... Yet this is not James Bond, but Austin Powers, the most psychedelic British spy in the universe. However, this third adventure, written by and starring the very funny Mike Myers, in which Austin faces off against Goldmember, is not the best installment in the series. Having escaped from prison, Dr. Evil teams up with the terrible Goldmember to once again destroy the Earth. When they kidnap Nigel Powers (Michael Caine), a high-class spy and Austin’s father, the latter decides to get rid of the villains. He will travel back in time and find, in 1975, a choice partner: the feline Foxxy Cleopatra (Beyoncé Knowles). Although he has become a real star, showered with love and money, Austin Powers still seeks to earn his father’s pride, much like Indiana Jones in The Last Crusade. To impress his father, he will try to forge an alliance with one criminal to flush out another, just as Agent Starling did in The Silence of the Lambs. And the list goes on. References to cinema, music, and advertising, as well as star cameos (Tom Cruise, Britney Spears, Steven Spielberg, etc.), abound. Even though there are some very good moments (like the opening credits staged like a musical) and the whole thing is easy enough to watch, one searches in vain for the true substance of Goldmember. Because with so many nods and pastiches, it is Austin Powers himself who ends up lacking depth. --Helen Faradji Amazon.ca It’s all there: the polished opening credits, the extravagant car, the style, the success with women...
