After more than a year of seclusion in their lair following half a decade that saw a frenetic sequence of events—a return to the stage in 2012, the album Brûle Consume Torture in 2014, and the band's 30th-anniversary celebration in 2016—Blasting All Rotten Fuckers (B.A.R.F. for short) plunges back into the heart of darkness with a sixth opus: Mantra.
Still featuring the same rock-solid lineup that includes veterans Marc Vaillancourt on vocals and Denis Lepage on guitar, bass virtuoso Dominic ‘’Forest’’ Lapointe, and the tireless machine Carlos Araya on drums, B.A.R.F. is at it again with an album in French that breathes maturity through its perennial themes of politics, injustice, hatred, war, and mortality. With Chris Donaldson (Cryptopsy, Beyond Creation, etc.) producing, Mantra is the natural evolution following its course.
Still halfway between grind and metalcore, B.A.R.F. remains true to itself, leaving the door open to all its influences to draw the essence of its constant renewal. It offers a hybrid of styles ranging from grind to punk, passing through doom, stoner, thrash, and even some progressive touches—an amalgamation that will please the spectrum of both young and older fans who continue to support this pillar of the Quebec scene.
