Details: Amazon.ca In 1990, in duet with Brad Scott, his faithful bassist, Arthur H tries to impose his only first name under the cumbersome label of "son of" (Jacques Higelin). He quickly established his reputation with the album Coll Jazz which, as its name suggests, bears the mark of its love of jazz. An impure jazz, sprinkled with funk, punk and rock dross, which has its eyes more on the excesses of Tom Waits than on the discipline of Sonny Rollins. Now surrounded by brass instruments, the sound of the adventurous Arthur H, who does not hesitate to offer himself remix versions of his own compositions, expands pleasantly to lead to Bachibouzouk, surrealist journey of more than an hour divided into sixteen titles, including four marine interludes. The album starts with the majestic "Bachibouzouk Band" with an ambition worthy of film music, immediately followed by the home-made DIY "A ghost asthmatic" and its reggae phlegm. Arthur H is a buffoon in the realm of French variety, a crank within the narrow framework of traditional song. Thanks to Arthur H, the amazed listener will learn that General de Gaulle envies Jack the Ripper ("General de Gaulle in the Fifth Dimension"), and that "Annabelle" perfectly embodies the hymn to eternal love. Caught up by the establishment, Arthur H received the trophy for male revelations at the Victoires de la Musique in February 93, a trophy that took nothing away from the burlesque delirium of "A blind man at the wheel" or "Con comme la lune", a nicely embellished title of a ukulele as a tribute to the Marylin Monroe of Some like it hot. --Sabrina Silamo
