Partying, love, and friendship: a trinity of infinite possibilities that Bernard Adamus expands with the stories of those around him. Three years after the sweeping remorse of his second album, No 2, he is back with Sorel Soviet So What, and he is in top form! To avoid rehashing the gloom once again, he has pushed aside the clouds and the despondency in favor of good times rolling, writing even cruder lyrics that live in the paradox of being more personal but less intimate. Sorel Soviet So What (already a contender for album of the year), is an exuberant and vibrant collection of country with mojo and groovy blues, which continues to chronicle his surroundings while opening up to the world. These ten new tracks propel the country and blues that have become Adamus’s trademark into a broadened and flourishing musical spectrum, augmented by surging rock 'n' roll, sweaty soul, and a light Hawaiian breeze. Ten tracks that turn gloom into its opposite, betting on the vibrancy, warmth, and liveliness of their arrangements. Recorded almost entirely in the vast room of Breakglass Studio in Montreal (with the exception of two tracks captured in the legendary basement of Éric Villeneuve, the loyal producer of all his albums), Sorel Soviet So What bears witness to the work of Adamus surrounded by seasoned musicians. Guys all playing live, without headphones, so that the energy of each instrument spills over into the recording of the others. It is an album that lives on the ardor of the studio’s collective dynamics. It’s Fred Fortin rapping, it’s Jeannot Bournival’s saxophone going wild, it’s the proven pedal steel of Joe Grass and the backing vocals of Daphné Brissette (Canailles), Anna Frances Meyer (Les Deuxluxes), and Nicole Carmen Godbout. Above all, it’s Bernard Adamus shining bright, putting down his guitar on half the tracks to let his voice go like a poor man’s Amy Winehouse. It’s an immense personality overflowing even more, and it’s glorious.
