Details: Amazon.ca For once, Yuli Turovsky, artistic director of the I Musici de Montréal ensemble, allows us, in Nocturnal Dances of Don Juan Quixote, to taste his qualities as an instrumentalist. The recording, which was given the title of Finnish composer Aulis Sallinen's work, also bears a descriptive subtitle, “the modern cello”. That of Turovsky, in any case, is fully mastered. Here is a musician who knows how to combine great virtuosity with fiery playing and overwhelming musicality. The choice of pieces is astonishing, full of humor and full of winks. In addition to a very funny “Don Juan Quixote”, I Musici and its chief soloist play three meditations taken from “La Messe” by Leonard Bernstein, “Trauermusik” by Paul Hindemith, “Rhapsody no 1” by Bartók and a “Figaro” (“Largo al factotum”) by Rossini recorded for the first time in the version by Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco. A pure pleasure. --Dominique Olivier
