Details: Amazon.ca If Brel was a big seller of records, he was above all, and all those who saw him on stage, will tell you, a beast of the stage. It is also thanks to a show producer, Jacques Canetti (the soul of the "Trois Baudets" in Pigalle), that he signed with Philips in 1953. The latter would direct his career until the departure of the two men from this record company of Dutch origin in 1962. Just before Canetti intervened, Brel performed at the Olympia in October 1961. In this room where Bruno Coquatrix mixes all styles (Johnny Hallyday had just passed by for the first time in September, Dalida will follow in November), Brel gives one of his finest shows. Not yet at the top, he sings with the energy of one who must conquer. Already armed with a solid repertoire, he goes on hit after hit: "Les Flamandes", "Marieke", "La Valse à mille temps", "Ne me quitte pas", "Le Moribond" (not yet adapted into English by Terry Jacks "Seasons in The Sun")... If two super-microgrooves are put on the market in addition to the 33 rpm (we do not say album yet), it is above all that Brel creates, during this Olympia, many new songs: "Les Bourgeois", "Madeleine", "Zangra", "Les Paumés du petit matin", "La Statue", "Les Singes" (which will then be released in studio version but at Barclay). "A Valse à 1000 bravos", such was the title that could be read in the press the next day... Forty years later, and for at least two reasons, we can only double the bet. --AB
