Canailles' first album is just like the band itself: joyfully and unapologetically mongrel. Casually juggling a blend of blues, Cajun, bluegrass, and folk, it elevates the group's raw energy, sincerity, and exuberance, while also revealing them in a more fragile and touching light.

Produced by none other than the fiery and brilliant Socalled and mixed by Philip Bova (Feist, Bell Orchestre, Stars), Manger du bois is driven by a wonderful madness and polished until it shines bright and far, thanks, among other things, to the inspired (brilliant, luminous, lit) additions of a few friends of the family, notably Jérôme Dupuis-Cloutier, Benoît Paradis, and Bernard Adamus.

It was released on the Grosse Boîte label in April 2012. Manger du bois immediately won the award for the only album on which the title track does not appear. Read that last sentence two or three times; it’s exhilarating, though not as much as seeing Canailles in concert. Reeeeehiiiii!
