Details: Amazon.ca While 1988's Chalk Mark in a Rain Storm hardly ranks alongside Joni Mitchell's classic albums, it does posses more charm than most of the adult contemporary pop that ruled at the time. That is, in spite of the sterile backing tracks and production that date it instantly as an '80s artifact. Largely a breezy, easy listen, the disc puts Mitchell's incomparable voice front and centre while co-producer Larry Klein paints by numbers around it. Even with touches of talking drum and congas, it's not exactly a rustic musical setting for a disc that's lyrically transfixed with prairie landscapes and running rivers. "My Secret Place" and "Cool Water" feature guest vocals from Peter Gabriel and Willie Nelson, respectively. More troubling is the aptly titled "Dancin' Clown," on which Billy Idol (!) wrestles the mike away from Mitchell and fellow guest Tom Petty long enough to almost sabotage the whole album. What must have felt like a bad idea 10 seconds after the disc was pressed doesn't sound better--just funnier--with the passage of time. --Kieran Grant Product Description Mitchell, Joni
