The energetic opening title "Fallen Off", "Coming Back", the Hispanic "En El Aire" or "No Home (Steady!)" are there to remind us. And if the explosive metal/rap mix hasn't changed one iota, it seems that the production is even more rootsy than before; the guitars of Ares and Roy Lozano (present on the Cypress Hill's Skull & Bones) are greasy and filthy, James Morris' rabid bass is loose in the wild with drool at his lips, finding the groove in the craziest places, and the lyrics are always ultra-politicized, on the model of a Rage Against The Machine. Although most of the lyrics, far from being devoid of interest – it's rare enough to be mentioned – are punctuated in the extremely tense rap, typical of this musical genre, the "messenger" Rey Oropeza (that's how that he prefers to define himself) tries sometimes more melodic things ("Together", "Which Way"), without losing a gram of intensity. Born in South Central, one of LA's toughest neighborhoods, and a former gang member, Oropeza remains credible when speaking out about the many ills plaguing his country, the highly effective "Play Big" and its slight Indian hue, "2000" or "Chemical Strangle", and that too is rare. We are far from the childishness of Fred Durst or Kid Rock… In short, Downset represents the simple and hard fringe of the hardcore movement, the one that is not only aimed at apprentice white skaters who are bored in their wealthy suburbs. --Dambusta
