Vent d'ouest / a creation by gilles ste-croix Amazon.ca Wild rides, droll gambols, spectacular acrobatics: the entire enchantment of Gilles Ste-Croix’s equestrian show, Cheval Théâtre, is evoked in the 13 tracks of this spellbinding record. Composer Bernard Poirier, a musician and musical director for several Quebec ensembles including La Fanfare Pourpour (Tout le monde), has created a rich and complex universe for the occasion that calls to mind circus music, klezmer rhythms, and the Fellini-esque creations of Nino Rota. Percussion, clarinet, saxophone, and accordion take center stage, supported by electric guitar in the more spirited moments or keyboards during more melancholic passages. Thirteen seasoned musicians lend their talents to this colorful musical experience. The voices of Lou Babin and Catherine Granger add nuance and expressivity to this album, which resembles the animal to which it pays tribute: full of spirit, elegance, beauty, and quiet confidence. --Julie Sergent
