Without completely abandoning its garage rock roots in the vein of the Stones and Velvet Underground, the Montreal combo led by Jimmy Hunt draws as much from 60s and 70s French pop as it does from North American roots-country-rock on this debut full-length album. Charlebois has been there before, and it is precisely to him—and others like Dutronc, Dylan, Les Wampas, or Hasil Adkins—that one’s mind wanders when listening to this "Piano élégant."

While the nods are numerous, it would be too easy to accuse Chocolat of mere revisionism. Jimmy Hunt adopts a "pop crooner" style with just enough detachment to avoid falling into caricature, and his lyrics, which are well-written and full of imagery, reveal a character who is at once romantic, funny, and unsettling. As for the musicians, they demonstrate an astonishing mastery of the sound and style inherent to this vast musical register. – Patrick Baillargeon, Voir.ca
