Details: Amazon.ca Luc Plamondon, considered by many to be one of the greatest lyricists of the Francophone world over the last 30 years, is back with Cindy, Cendrillon 2002. Following the phenomenal success of the musical Notre-Dame de Paris, inspired by Victor Hugo's novel, the most-performed Quebecois author in the world is this time playing the card of a fairy tale revisited through lyrics and music. In this umpteenth version, Cinderella lives in the Paris suburbs with her wicked stepmother, an ex-disco singer, and her two stepsisters. She meets Ricky, Prince Charming disguised as a rock star, in a trendy nightclub… The result is not quite up to Plamondon's reputation. The lyrics revisit many of the turn-of-the-millennium themes already addressed, in a more original way, in his musical Starmania, written in 1979. The performers, French and Quebecois (a habit for Plamondon), do what they can with rather thin material: very sugary pop music by Romano Musumarra, who has worked with Alain Delon, Ray Charles, Pavarotti… and Stephanie of Monaco. One will especially notice the phenomenal voice of Canadian Patsy Gallant and the heartfelt performance of Quebec's Judith Bérard on the song "Salaud." For die-hard fans only. --Jean-Yves Girard
