Comatised
Author: Naess, Leona
Format: Enhanced
Release Date: 14-03-2000
Details: Amazon.ca Unlike the cheery and, indeed, barely remembered Stephanie De Sykes, New York's Liz Phair-style angst-slinger Leona Naess--the 25-year-old daughter of a Norwegian shipping magnate--was certainly not "born with a smile on her face". Or maybe it's just that Comatised, her debut album, illustrates well the numbness of her personal spirit arrived at through not having a full mailbox on Valentine's Day (see the narky indie-pop thrust of the anti-lover-boy "Charm Attack" or the "found him but better keep my distance" sentiments of "Chosen Family"). Naess is more in keeping with the post-Alanis problem-page school of thought (with a little added essence of Vega, Rickie Lee Jones, Chrissie Hynde and Sinead O' Connor) than the all-too-readily applied label of gothic-folk (that one won't convince admirers of the altogether more feral and mythologically inclined PJ Harvey). Comatised is stylishly sparse and emotionally thick-skinned, but also possesses real moments of haunting beauty, as on the string-laden Nick Drake sorrowfulness of the icy "Northern Star". --Kevin Maidment Product description Leona Naess ~ Comatised
