Details: The best informed will know that Half Moon Run's first album was released in 2012 in Canada and that the sublime "Full Circle" was already traveling on the Internet more than a year ago. Others have already had the opportunity to see them set their guitars ablaze at the Parisian Flèche d'Or as the opening act for Willy Moon that year, or shortly afterwards at the Divan du Monde. Even a year later, we delight in (re)discovering the Dark Eyes of the Montreal-based trio. Neither quite folk nor quite pop, but a bit of both at the same time, this first opus is of rare finesse. Because it avoids the gimmicks of both genres, the often pathetic orchestration of the first and the entertaining essence of the second, to tap into unsuspected registers: psychedelia with the excellent "She Wants to Know", revisited soul from "Need it" and its inlays of strings and solemn choirs and even electro jazz in "21 Gun Salute". So many great sound variations executed without the slightest disparity which are the strength of Half Moon Run. The Canadians have the science of sound and manage to impose their signature from the first try with an irreproachable production and a sense of rhythm both in the phrasing of leader Devon Portielje and his vocal supports as in the martial drum strikes of Dylan Phillips. Scattered with skillful and graceful nuances, Dark Eyes is at the same time vaporous and shadowy (the rumbling pedal games), fiery and languorous (the lascivious bass line), frenetic and melancholy. Sometimes it summons the folk richness “and more” of Alt-J, sometimes the tortuous greatness of Radiohead and the angelism of its leader. Peculiarities and not the least that we also owe, even above all, to the voice of Portielje, of a disarming flexibility. A penetrating and stimulating album. Copyright 2013 Music Story
