Details: Amazon.ca Refusing to let themselves be locked into the straitjacket of neometal, the Deftones invoke their multi-ethnicity (two Mexicans, a Chinese and a white) to claim a diversity of influences allowing them to reach a very large audience. That's the theory. In practice, however, things have to be called by their proper name. The Deftones play neither grunge, nor punk-rock (and even less hardcore, contrary to what we have sometimes read), nor hard rock, nor even "normal" metal (although the energy that they give off readily lends itself to it), but indeed neometal. And too bad if we often put a little everything and anything in this category. Because, even if the Deftones know how to be cajoler on occasion, when the tempo is slower and Chico Moreno's voice more languorous, they tend to press their chords singularly... perhaps also to get rid of overly blatant resemblances with Korn which were reproached to them at the time of Adrenaline, their first album.
