The quartet's first album, released in 1978, owes much of its charm to the virtuoso electric finger-picking of Mark Knopfler, who says he adopted this style out of sheer laziness one day when he lost his pick. Be that as it may, the clarity of the guy's Stratocaster sound, combined with his gruff voice (the Dylan school) and a discreet, but still swinging rhythm, work miracles. Clearly a fan of JJ Cale's relaxed country-blues, the eldest Knopfler also turns out to be a skilled songwriter, celebrating an obscure but deserving jazz formation (the irresistible "Sultans Of Swing"), dissecting romantic relationships ( "Six Blade Knife") or taunts artistic circles ("In The Gallery"). Quite a business card for a group that we imagined at the time to fill pubs more than stadiums! --Glenn Dale Product Description 1978 album from the British Rock band led by guitarist/vocalist Mark Knopfler. When their self-titled debut album was released in 1978, the band garnered plenty of attention but it took another seven years before BROTHERS IN ARMS turned them into global superstars. After one more studio album, the band split up but they left behind a lasting legacy that continues to be embraced by new fans and new generations every year.
