Author: Major-Matte, Annie

Details: Known for playing Daphné in Le Club des 100 watts, Marie-Ange in Les Filles de Caleb, and Léa in Frimousse, Annie Major-Matte has decided to make the leap from the small screen to music with Dissidence. Don’t let the title fool you; the artist’s debut record offers nothing that goes against market trends, bringing together 14 songs of pop spiced with occasional rock ("Tout ou rien"), funk ("Le Café"), or even jazzy ("Baby Lilly") accents.

Major-Matte, who co-wrote most of the tracks with producer Tino Izzo and former The Box frontman Jean-Marc Pisapia, fares quite well when she delves into energetic pop: her vocal lines are well-delivered, and her lyrics, which often focus on relationships, are confident ("Tu peux disposer/Ta respiration s’est calmée"). It is a different story entirely when she sings her ballads, with their syrupy arrangements and conventional lyrics, which quickly betray the limitations of her voice. Dissidence is therefore an uneven album, which counts its best moments early on, notably with the effective "Feu de paille," which easily slipped into the top 10. --Nicolas Houle
